Registration is now closed, thanks for your support.

The Penn Central bicycle tour traverses the heartland of Pennsylvania, characterized by lightly traveled roads, small towns and villages with charm and personality. We eat and sleep well at state universities and colleges. Along the 450 mile trip the terrain is varied. We seek out  river valleys and ridges that present the most desired route across the state.

Pennsylvania is a big, beautiful and challenging state. The Allegheny and Blue Mountains are for real. They're part of the appeal. The Penn Central is for riders who enjoy a challenge. If you prepare yourself with appropriate training and equip your bike with suitable gearing, you will ride with strength and confidence, and you will enjoy the ride much more for it.

Day by Day:
Saturday, June 25th

near Pittsburgh, PA
Mileage: 18
We meet at our finishing point in Kulpsville load our trucks with bikes and luggage and board our luxury coach for the trip to Greensburg. The campus sits along an old stand of white and red oaks with a nature walk to enjoy on the hillside.

Mileage: 60

Our route to Johnstown gives you a taste of the western Pennsylvania mountains, the small towns, fast descent and history of that characterizes the commonwealth. This new route takes us to Latrobe, sorry the brewery will be closed on Sunday morning.  This allows us to avoid the climbs into Johnstown, NO Pickin Chicken Hill. We will pass the Johnstown Flood Museum on our to the University.

Mileage: 44

We've caught our second wind and roll on to Altoona, a big-time cycling town and home of the Tour de Toona road-racing classic. This new route from Johnstown to Altoona will include Horseshoe Curve National Landmark, an awesome engineering feat - moving a mountain on the backs of laborers to permit western railroad expansion.

To: State College
Mileage: 55

On to "Happy Valley" home of Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions, we cycle rural roads through small communities and abundant farmlands. State College, where Beaver Stadium looms like an immense spaceship, is a happening college town with shops, sights and friendly "watering holes".

Wednesday, June 29th
To: Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove
Mileage: 73

Today will long remain in your bicycling memory as we cycle a stunning Pennsylvania Dutch farm valley with tiny communities, handsome farms, and the inevitable clip-clop of horse and buggy. Penn's Cave and Wildlife Preserve is a side excursion where underground formations may be seen by boat. Entering Bald Eagle State Forest, we have lunch at Raymond Winter State Park where sandy beach and lake means great swimming. We pass through Mifflinburg, a charming Victorian town and enjoy a long descent into the Susquehanna River Valley at Selinsgrove, an attractive college town.

Thursday, June 30th
To: Elizabethtown

A lot of folks have requested less climbing so the goal of this new Penn Central route is to omit some of the epic Pennsylvania climbs that are Pennsylvania! Going to Elizabethtown will allow us to bypass Gold Mine Rd over Blue Mountain. Lunch on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Millersburg, home of the Millersburg Ferry, the last remaining ferry crossing of the river.
